New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation today organizes
a sensitization workshop on substance abuse in partnership with NGOs ‘Society
for All Round Development’ (SARD) and Heart Care Foundation of India for its Principals,
School Inspectors and Teachers. The objective of this workshop is to create
awareness about ‘Substance Abuse’ among students through the medium of
teachers. Chairman of Education Committee, Mr. Satish Upadhyaya , Director
(Education) Mr. Rajesh Pathak, Chairman of Heart Care Foundation Mr.
K.K.Aggarwal and other official of Education Department attended the workshop.
On the occasion Mr. Satish Upadhyaya said that children get
addicted to Drugs in peer pressure, experimentation, curiosity, enjoyment. The
reasons for Drug addiction can be psychological, social and domestic. The role
of teachers is constructive and crucial in substance abuse as they are not only
teachers but guide and counselor for the students. Teachers should imbibe good
habits other than education in students.

Aggarwal addressing the teachers said that it is the responsibility of the
teachers to guide the students in right directions, so that they stay away from
this type of addiction and be healthy. Mr. Aggarwal took the examples from
Shrimadbhagvatgita and taught the teachers how to became a good counselor. He
said that a good teacher should be a good listener, he should patiently listen
and understand the problems related to substance abuse and other of this type.
Teachers can suggest better solution to the problems of the students. The role
of teachers is as a counselor who prevents the students from drugs, but when a
child completely addicted to drugs then he should take him to a doctor instead
of counseling.
The workshop was conducted by Mr, H.K Sharma from National
Drugs Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS.
