Many of these shows were immensely popular during their original run and continue to be remembered with affection and nostalgia even today.

The television landscape of that era was very different from what we see now. There were only a handful of channels, and Doordarshan had a unique place in the hearts of Indian viewers. With limited entertainment options, families often gathered together in front of a single television set to watch their favourite programmes. More importantly, popular Doordarshan shows reached people across different age groups and sections of society.

Among the memorable programmes of that golden era was a delightful family sitcom that made audiences laugh by turning ordinary family situations into extraordinary comedy.Yes, we are talking about the much-loved serial “Dekh Bhai Dekh.”

Dekh Bhai Dekh: A Beloved 90s Doordarshan Classic

Dekh Bhai Dekh premiered in 1993 and quickly became one of the most remembered family comedy shows of its time.

The story revolved around the Diwan family, who lived together in an old bungalow in Mumbai. Instead, Dekh Bhai Dekh found comedy in things that people encountered in their own homes—family arguments, misunderstandings, personal habits, domestic problems and the playful chaos of living together.

That familiarity helped viewers develop a strong emotional connection with the characters.

A Talented Cast That Made the Diwan Family Memorable

The show's popularity was also closely associated with its talented ensemble cast, which included Navin Nischol, Farida Jalal, Shekhar Suman, Sushma Seth and Bhavana Balsavar, among others.

Navin Nischol played Balraj Diwan, the patriarch of the family.
