Mayor slams detention of twelve Greenpeace activities in Delhi
New Delhi: EDMC Mayor Annapurna Mishra has said that it is quite unfortunate that 12 Greenpeace activists, who were trying to get a message across to the Union Agriculture Minister in a peaceful, non-violent way are detained at Mayapuri Police Station. They were urging the Minister to stop promoting Genetically Modified Crops in the name of food security. This technology has been controversial throughout its existence and so far no GM crops are developed which can increase production per se. Moreover the Minister is trying to trivialize the issue of food security in the country which is much more than a production issue. Its high time that the Government adopted a holistic view of food security by investing in sustainable production systems, better storage and distribution systems and by ensuring sustainable livelihoods for the poor. By chosing to protest at a FCI godown, the activists were peacefully trying to get across this message. I demand that the activists be released at the earliest and Government take their message seriously.
