New Delhi: Delhi Power Minister Haroon Yusuf stated that BJP is all out to mislead people of Delhi by making hue & cry over water and power issues whereas it has never been interested in joining discussion on these issues in the Assembly.  Sh. Yusuf while replying to a debate on short notice discussion on water, power & LPG moved by Sh. Mukesh Sharma and Dr. Narendra Nath, stated that the days of inverters, DG sets and power riots are now part of the history as people are getting quality power 24X7.
Even Hon’ble Supreme Court on 23.11.2012 appreciated the power scenario in Delhi and acknowledged the best results from the privatization in the Capital city.  Sh. Yusuf further stated that during 1993-98, the power situation was terrible as Hon’ble MLAs had to save their skin being scared of people’s wrath over non-availability of power and mismanagement in DVB.  The demand at that time was 2800 MW which touched today 5700 MW, the government met it successfully.
During 2002, prior to privatization the issue of power was treated as the foremost topic, during 2006 it relegated to third position and in 2012 power is not at all an issue.  This is enough to realize the success of privatization.  Delhi Government saved an amount of Rs. 30,000 cr., which would have been provided to DVB if privatization had not taken place.  The amount has been utilized for infrastructure development, hence, making Delhi a world-class city.  In order to overcome blackout like situation in Delhi due to gross indiscipline in national grid by other states, the city government approached the Union Power Ministry to provide an islanding facility for Delhi.  This is the biggest achievement of the government, which would go a long way in ensuring uninterrupted power supply.  Sh. Yusuf added that DERC has prerogative to decide power tariff.  Delhi has been liberal as far as power tariff is concerned.  The tariff was not hiked between 2006-07 to 2010-11.  We have brought substantial deduction in AT&C losses.  On water front, Sh. Yusuf stated that the city government is striving hard to ensure equitable distribution.  It has increased generation from 410 MGD to 875 MGD during last 13 years.  There is no move to privatize DJB.  On LPG Sh. Yusuf stated that the city government has announced three more subsidized cylinders for BPL families covered under Delhi Kerosene-free scheme.  It had also given substantial relief of Rs.50/- per cylinder across the board in the past.
Initiating debate Sh. Mukesh Sharma stated that 99.1% in Delhi are having electricity connection.  The government has dispensed with development charges on electric connection.  The per capita consumption of power is 1450 against national figure of 775.  During 1993-98 incidents of 1500 power riots were recorded whereas during last 14 years there is no such case.  The power demand has raised from 2879 MW to 5700 MW.  The city government used to face loss of around Rs.1500 cr. per year prior to privatization.
