New Delhi: Delhi Transport Minister Sh. Ramakant Goswami today stated that the first Monorail Corridor would become functional in East Delhi. It would usher in an era of public transport at the doorstep of people in congested colonies, where it is impossible to lay Metro Rail lines.

Goswami alongwith East Delhi MP Sh. Sandeep Dikshit and MD (DMRC) Mangu Singh today took a round of route-alignment of the first Monorail Corridor in the Capital city. In fact, it would be the first-ever Monorail Corridor in North India. Sh. Dikshit stated that 11km corridor from Shastri Park Metro Station to Trilokpuri will have 12 stations with three inter-change points.

Goswami and Sh. Dikshit while taking a round of route-alignment and proposed sites of the stations gave suitable instructions to the DMRC to make the corridor more purposeful and useful. Sh. Goswami stated that the corridor would cater to around 1.5 lakh passengers per day initially. It is proposed that the fare would be somewhat identical to Metro fares.

Dikshit stated that the East Delhi colonies are congested and are becoming more congested with coming up of high rise buildings. The buses are the main mode of public transport. In spite of three Metro lines catering to different parts of East Delhi, there is a need to have another mass transit connectivity in form of the Monorail to supplement the services of Delhi Metro. It is more easy and cheap to lay Monorail lines than Metro lines. The Monorail can take sharp curves than Metro. It can also run in densely populated localities as it takes lesser area to operate.

The 12 stations to be made functional are Shastri Park, Kailash Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Taj Enclave, Geeta Colony, Guru Angad Nagar, Scope Tower, Ganesh Nagar, Mother Dairy, Patparganj, Kotla and Trilokpuri.
