Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today exhorted the society to take a lesson from the heinous incident of 16th December, 2012. She described it as a ‘Warning Bell’ for the society and requested one and all to bring a positive change in society in order to ensure security, safety and dignity of women.
While expressing deep concern over the declining sex ratio Smt. Dikshit stated that the incident of female foeticide are becoming more common in affluent society. It has been noticed that in one of the neighbouring states, the families are forced to bring their daughter-in-laws from far off states and even from other countries as the sex ratio has touched the lowest which is alarming for the entire humanity. We all are responsible for this state-of-affair as desire for having a son in the family is becoming more and more forceful resulting in neglect to the needs of girl child.
Dikshit added that her government has always been sensitive one as it has been striving hard to accelerate the process of women empowerment. The Government has been providing monthly pension upto ` 1500/- to the widows, deserted women apart from a one-time amount of ` 30,000/- to the widows for marriage of their daughter. The government has set up a helpline 181 for women in distress, which is being emulated by other states. The government’s efforts resulted in setting up of five fast-track courts.
Dikshit stated that the new Centre would providing training in different trades including sewing, embroidery, textile designing and computer programs. She also referred to number of social sector schemes being implemented by her government which included Laadli, Kishori, Dilli Annshree, Kerosene-free Delhi, etc. Smt. Dikshit further stated that her government has been functioning as a welfare-oriented state in true sense. She also stated that all colonies will be regularized including colonies on forest ridge and near ASI. There would be no demolition and no uprooting of families from such colonies. She also distributed bicycles to 15 meritorious girl students from South District.
