New Delhi: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has stated that her government is committed to provide fire safety in all its government schools. The PWD was entrusted to provide fire safety provisions in 441 government school buildings by providing fire alarm measures, fire escape measures and fire fighting measures. Subsequent upon declaration of one school as unsafe and three other being transferred to DSIIDC, the scope of work of PWD has been restricted to 441 schools.

The Cabinet has approved a revised estimate of Rs.112.15 crores for this purpose. It may be pointed out that the PWD has completed the work in 241 schools and work is under progress in other 20 schools. In respect of remaining 180 schools work is yet to commence. Smt. Dikshit has directed the Director of Education and PWD to work in tandem in order to ensure full fire safety in schools keeping in view the valuable lives of the wards.
