New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today inaugurated a pilot project at Vasant Kunj in order to facilitate re-use of kitchen-waste water for horticulture purposes in the colony. The Kitchen-waste Water Re-cycling Project has been initiated by the RWA C-9 and supported by Delhi Parks & Garden Society under the city government. It is an effort to keep colony parks green without using up fresh ground water.
Dikshit described it as a welcome step which would go a long way in using re-cycled water for horticulture purposes and would also help in re-charging ground water. Speaker, Delhi Vidhan Sabha Dr. Yoganand Shastri, Local MP Shri Ramesh Kumar and others were present on this occasion.
The RWA has installed the ZEKS in Central Park. Kitchen-waste water from flats is being used for the system. Through a series of filter screen, settlement tanks and grease taps, it removes impurity from the waste water and makes it fit for use for greening. Smt. Dikshit stated that 80% of the water that falls on our roads and rooftops is wasted as it flows out through our drains.
To use this water the RWAs has also used the abandoned tube-well in Central Park for Rainwater Harvesting System. The system takes water from the storm, water drain running next to park. This drain not only carries surplus rainwater but also the overflows of the residents’ water tank. The water is cleaned through a settlement tank and then a three-stage membrane filter. Clean water then entered the abandoned tube-well and adds to the ground water reserve in the park.
Dikshit appreciated the unique initiative to promote water conservation in a big way. She added that this is a timely initiative which would prove to be a role model for other RWAs. Once large number of RWAs adopt this system, water conservation efforts would gain momentum. She expressed her deep concern over fast-depleting ground water in the Capital city. The efforts would also go a long way in maintaining the greenery in the locality.
