On the occasion of World Tobacco Day, we must be acquainted with some of the dangerous facts related to Tobacc on and its impact for our health. Tobacco is the leading cause of death, diseases and disability. 50 lakh people die each year in the world due to tobacco use. It has been estimated that by 2030, developing countries will account for 70% of all tobacco death. 


According to the Delhi Health and family Welfare Minister Dr. Ashok Kumar Walia, It has been estimated that by 2030, developing countries will account for 70% of all tobacco death. Many of these deaths will occur during the most productive years of ones life.
 In India around 10 lakh people loss their live for the same reason which is much more than combine toll of Malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS. Tobacco is the only slow poison which is legally available and accessible in every where.

Dr. Walia Pointed out that to tackle with this sticky situation Govt. of India and GNCTD has taken various stringent measures in the form of enforcing Delhi Prohibition of Smoking and Non Smokers Health Protection Act 1996 and Cigarette and other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003 etc. Apart from that Government of Delhi is also keep monitoring on regular basis by constituting eight raiding squads under eight districts.


Ban on Smoking in Public Places which has come into effect from 2nd October 2008 has been implemented in satisfactory manner. On other hand ban on gutkha has been implemented w.e.f 11.09.2012.

Despite of adopting several measure, the desired goal of protecting minors from accessibility of any tobacco products and protect the rights of non smokers especially children and woman has not been fulfilled in effective manner. Therefore it is required to initiate effective action on all tobacco products in strategic manner.

Meeting with high level officers from Delhi police, Education , Transport and Health Department and identification of nodal officer from these respective departments for Preparation documents/ Module on Tobacco Free Concept, Sensitization/Capacity building workshop programme for nodal officers, Civil Society members, media personnel etc. 

Engagement of NGOs in awareness generation programme for students, teachers, Police personnel, staff under Health department and Transport department. .Capacity building of enforcement staff. IEC programme (Distribution of Tobacco Free Display Board and other educational material), outdoor campaign etc.
